Why You Would Use a Midwife for Delivery

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Pregnancy and delivery; a source of joy and pain for the woman.Obviously joy is involved with the new baby, but if you ask most woman, they will also describe it was a source of unspeakable pain.

Well it is because of that pain that there are two schools of thought on how pregnancy and delivery should be carried about.  I am going to offer some perspective on one particular school of thought that I have gained first hand experience with by being a homebirth midwife San Diego.

There is the medical model for delivering babies which is tied in with using drugs to kill the pain, and sometimes c -sections to finish the delivery.

There is one other model, though not as common or accepted, but for those that practice it and believe in it, consider it a safer alternative for the woman.

That model is called the midwifery model. That is in obvious contrast with the usual medical model way of doing things. The medical model is where you rely heavily on medicine, while the midwifery model relies on the natural.  Midwifery believes that pregnancy and delivery is a natural process and thus should be allowed to happen naturally.

This model is carried out by a profession called midwives. Midwives San Diego are generally woman, who attend the birth, often times at the mother’s home.  This midwife would then assist the woman in trying to get through labor as naturally as possible without medicine.

Contrary to popular belief, the non-use of medicine actually allows the labor to happen much faster because most pain killers actually slows the labor down.

The midwife is a profession that has a regulatory board that oversees, certifies, and licenses the individual.

Although a lot of the times they are not a nurse or a doctor, a midwife sometimes is a nurse also.

Even though they are not formal doctors or nurses, they will have some medical equipment for emergencies like resuscitation devices and equipment for suturing.

So this describes what a midwife is and what midwifery is about in relation to pregnancy and delivery.

Their goals are to allow the birth and delivery to happen as naturally as possible. This makes the likelihood of a c-section less likely.  Doesn’t allow you to be subject to invasive hospital procedures such as episiotomys.  Less medical management like breaking the water or using drugs to slow or speed up the pregnancy. And the part woman love the most, usually labor and delivery happen much faster naturally.

My hope is that this information has given you more information on the benefits of midwifery and using a midwife in your pregnancy.  At the very least, hopefully it gives you more options to explore.  Remember this is first hand knowledge from a San Diego midwife.

We are in the midst of a global epidemic of obesity. Our increasingly sedentary lives, combined with greater calorific intake, have a predictable outcome – rising obesity.

Deckelbaum and Williams in their published paper, “Childhood Obesity: The health Issue” estimate there are 22 million children world wide less than 5 years of age who are obese. Amongst a raft of recommendations they specifically suggest attention to the health and activities of young children –  for them to eat less, more wisely and to do more physically exercise.

As a society we should be embarrassed by this , as it has been demonstrated to lead onto further health problems in adulthood. They view the prevention of obesity a primary goal from as young as possible.

Teachers can contribute in breaking the slide, by educating on improved dietary regimes and including greater esposure to physical exercise in children’s activities.

Exercise, eat smart and live an extended life

For young kids, amongst other things, this means simple things like taking part in the diverse range of activities that can be facilitated by giant games. Make in physical and fun.

Exercise play mats can be found in a wide variety of genre that promote their healthy, early childhood development. As aid to teaching literacy, numeracy, cultural awareness, local knowledge and co-ordination skills, they make the task easy and fun.

With these genre of games and play mats often you can be working on multiple facets of children’s development all at the same time.

Along the same lines, giant, fun educational games are large, metre by metre reproductions of the table top versions, but instead of playing seated, you are immersed within an “Alice in Wonderland” giant tea party scenario.

If you’re a teaching professional you’ll understand how important exercise in it’s many forms is. Ideas, ideas are the hallmark of a true educationalist. Custom children’s exercise mats in of many genre offer the opportunity to take pedagogy in new directions.

Discounted Rifle Scopes. Rifle Scope Deals

Why is finding the supreme riflescope for oneself so challenging? Well, mainly as of the huge number of choices available, which makes it difficult to zero in, so to speak, on the riflescope that works optimal for you. The problem is multiplied by the fact that the multitude of riflescopes on the market usually differ from one other in very minute details, but that might have a profound effect on a rifle scope’s useage, but which may not be visible to anyone except a professional. This and the other writings will assist you choose the best rifle scope.

Remember the basics

Ask yourself what you want the rifle scope to accomplish. Separate from the greater roles you intend it to play, recall that basically, a rifle scope has to help you aim, because that gives you an indication of target distance above all else. Therefore, the best rifle scopes should have perfect precision, and be strong, light, and possess excellent optics. It also goes without saying that a rifle scope should be securely mounted and be perfectly aligned. Just think what a loose riflescope can do to your aim and you’ll realize what I mean.

Picture perfect

The clarity of the image is of pressing importance when buying a riflescope. Obviously, you need a scope that is capable of delivering maximum light to the eyepiece, which adds up to a sharper resolution and a clearer aim. A thumb rule in this respect is to choose scopes with larger objective lens, which ensure greater light. Another crucial consideration is lens quality, because a lens that is rough around the edges will obviously generate distorted images. Equally important is lens coating, which cuts down on reflective glare and creates a brighter image. So a multi-coated lens is essential.

Fine-tuning

You don’t want to waste your time between shots fiddling with the adjustment mechanism on your riflescope, do you? Well, this is likely to happen unless you have checked your scope for parallax error while buying. This means that even a slight shift in eye position will cause a shift in the aim. Plus naturally you will need your rifle scope to be completely weather proof- maybe an obvious point, but the cheaper the manufacturer, the more likely quality problems occur.

Zeroing in

This final little section is intended for those who have not figured out how to ‘zero’ a riflescope, and are instead shooting madly at what they think is the target, unfortunately going wide of the mark every time. This only refers to getting the sight properly set up. There are many thoughts as to the best way to zero a rifle scope, but provided your scope is well aligned and firmly mounted, and you should be lying in a normal shooting position to zero the scope. Do not press your eye bang up against the scope lens, but leave a little gap, which is called eye relief. Once you have loaded your rifle, begin with alignment shots to true your sights.

Do expensive Snooker Cues help you play better?

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Watching Snooker at World Class level - the likes of John Higgins, Ronnie O Sullivan for example. Tough to imagine playing like those players - right? Well, like many great sports people their skill and effortless rhythm comes from talent, years of practice and experience.

Would it be true if you used a professional Snooker Cue that you would become a world class player? Hardly?

I started out years ago playing in my local snooker hall. I always used the clubs cues. It must of been a few years i’d been playing snooker with my buddies when one Saturday night a new guy joined our circle. I was mystified buy him. He was carrying this oblong box, guarding it closely! I’d seen a few other guys’ holding similar cases in the club but this particular one had a real classy finish to it.

Yep, He was carrying a snooker cue case - you guessed it probably. I couldn’t wait to see what was in the box.

Well, I wasn’t disappointed when he finally revealed the content. The Cue Came out. “How about a game” he said smilling?”

When we got underway with the game I very quickly realised this guy had played before. Although he was very generous with his comments on my standard of play, he absolutely slaughtered me in the first couple of games. I wern’t too upset, I was picking up so many tips. The whole time I was watching him play I couldn’t help looking at the cue he was using. The action was amazing. The refined finish just felt smooth, polished. It sounded different when it made contact with the ball. What a solid sound it made. He hit the ball effortlessly.

After a while he must have noticed I was glancing at his cue all the time and I was delighted when he kindly said, “do you wanna have a go with my cue?” I jumped at the chance!

What came next was a total revelation! The moment that cue entered my hand and felt the weight of it I just knew it was in a different league. I couldn’t help staring at it for a couple of seconds. I must have had a ridiculous expression on my face because he said, “are you alright?”I think so - never had a go with one of these. “It feels and looks awesome. He laughed. I asked him what it was. Peradon makes them he said. It didn’t mean anything to me, all I knew was that it felt awesome and when I got down to using it, within moments it changed the way I thought about my game forever! I’m not kidding, my potting was just incredible. Must of got at least half as many more balls in as usuall that night!

What makes these sticks so good I asked? He said Peradon have been making Snooker Cue’s for the industry since 1885 - they’re the oldest cue makers in the world and they are associated with Snooker legends like Joe Davies (well before my time). They did things like hand splicing the butt end and loads of other things he went on to say.

My point here is that a good snooker cue may or may not make you a World Champion Snooker Player but it will go a long way to improving your existing game if your just starting out.
